Dog Training Classes at K9 Resort & Spa

Taking your dog to dog training classes isn't only about learning how to train your dog.  Certainly it is that but much more, it also means you will have a happy canine friend who pays attention, walks near you on or off the leash, sits when you ask him to sit, and hangs out politely while you enjoy a meal with your friends.

What does dog training mean to the dog?  It means he has an enjoyable, interesting life in a home where he understands his role and what he needs to do to keep the good things in life coming!

Behavior Adjustment Training For Dogs (BAT)

Behavior adjustment training (BAT) is a unique training system that works to teach both the dog owner and dog new habits. Dog owners are taught how to recognize the body signals, given by their dogs, that predicts unwanted behavior such as pulling on the leash, barking, growling, lunging etc. At the same time, dogs are taught to move away from distractions before they become fearful, angry or frustrated.

Behavior Adjustment Training for dogs with fear, frustration or aggressive issues is a specialty of animal behaviorist Penny DiLoreto.  Classes offered in private and semi-private participation.

BAT classes are scheduled as a set of six private classes for $480.00.  Classes are between the dog owner and the trainer at your home, dog park, or other venues determined by the behaviorist-trainer determined to be best for the dog and the issues. When appropriate other dogs, humans, etc are introduced into the environment as needed to assist in the training to improve the dog's behavior appropriately. K9 Resort & Spa offers a Free Evaluation of your dog for the purpose of determining whether B.A.T. is the correct approach or if there is another program that would work better. B.A.T. has proven extremely successful for dogs with Fear, Frustration, and/or Aggression issues. BAT has caught on world-wide in the past few years and K9 Resort & Spa is the only facility in San Diego County utilizing this remarkable training program. The training is entirely "Positive Reinforcement" and has shown remarkable benefits for dogs and their owners. If you are concerned about taking your dog to Dog Park, Dog Beach, etc, you may be interested in this program.

Generally speaking the Behavior Adjustment Training is accomplished over a 6-week period.  The trainer will determine the best setting for the training.  It could be at the K9 Resort & Spa training center, at your home, or somewhere else depending upon the needs for your dog.  When the program for your dog is set up those decisions will be discussed.  Depending upon the situation with your dog, whether it be dog aggression, fear or frustration issues, progress will begin to take place with each class.  In severe cases the training may be on-going and can take longer than the initial 6-week period.  However, the dog owner will be involved and understand what progress is being made and why.  Also, it is extremely important that the dog owner/handler follow through with the home-work that is given to support progress being made.

Canine Good Citizen Training For Dogs (CGC)

This adult dog training class for dog's 1-year and older is called Canine Good Citizen by the American Kennel Club.  The program is designed to address dog behavior issues such as; jumping on people, not coming when called, pulling on leash, etc. At the end of this 6 week course, you and your dog will be given the CGC test (see test example below.) Upon successful completion of the CGC test, you will receive:

Canine Good Citizen dog training is designed to address dog behavior issues in dogs one year and older.  AKC Canine Good Citizen is planned to reward dogs who have good dog behavior at home and out in public. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

As of January 1, 2013, Canine Good Citizen® became an official AKC title that can appear on the title records of dogs registered or listed with AKC. Dog owners who complete the CGC as a Title process may list the suffix “CGC” after the dog’s name.  Since the program began in 1989, CGC™ has been considered an “award,” meaning that it has not been listed on a dog’s title record.

Both purebred and mixed breed dogs are welcome to participate in the Canine Good Citizen Program. Dogs must be old enough to have received necessary immunizations such as rabies vaccines. Owners will sign the Responsible Dog Owners Pledge attesting to having the dog under the routine care of a veterinarian who will work with the owner to determine an appropriate plan and schedule for vaccines and other health care procedures.

There is no age limit for the CGC test. A dog is never too old to be a good citizen. Puppies who have completed all immunizations and boosters may be tested, however, because we know that behavior and temperament can change over time, when puppies pass the CGC test, owners should have them re-tested as adults.

There are a few exceptions relating to participation in a CGC test. If the CGC test is given at an AKC show, the age requirements for the show apply to CGC also. Further, when the CGC test is administered at an AKC show, the test may be restricted to only dogs entered in the show or to purebred dogs.

In preparation for the CGC test, K9 Resort & Spa offers a six-week dog training program to train and prepare your dog.  Owners who have trained their dogs themselves may also have their dogs tested for a fee.  On the last week of Canine Good Citizen training, persons enrolled in the dog training class will be administered the test with their dog.

LA Paws Training For Dogs

Whether you expecting your first child, are new parents, or already have a toddler at home, it’s important to know that your dog shows restraint and manners around your child at home. Gain confidence having a baby and a dog at home.

After Lamaze the baby comes home, after La Paws the dog makes good choices around the baby.

Whether you expecting your first child, are new parents, or already have a toddler at home, it’s important to know that your dog shows restraint and manners around your child at home. Gain confidence having a baby and a dog at home.

Getting ready for a new baby is a very busy time and it may be easy to forget all about the dog.  However, the introduction of a newborn into the household is a stress filled time for everyone, including the those of the 4-legged variety.

Whether you have a small dog at home, a large dog or you are just considering bringing a dog into the home where small children are included, steps should be taken to provide a safe environment for all.  K9 Resort & Spa's "La Paws" class is an intentional play-on-words with Lamaze classes for expectant families.  That is because it is important to think of the dog and the child's relationship when they get together.

Perhaps you already have a small child and there needs to be some training in that existing relationship.  Does the dog jump up on the child and perhaps knock him or her down?  Does the child carry the small dog around by the neck?  Has their been and growling or nipping going on?  All of these are signs that some attention is needed.

What about bringing then new-born home and into the "pack"?  Perhaps you haven't thought of it that way before but if you have a dog at home, you are a member of that dog's pack as far as the dog is concerned.  How do you introduce a new and infant human member into the pack?

Whether you have considered these issues or not, now is a good time and K9 Resort & Spa's La Paws class is intended to do just that.  La Paws is a small group class (no more than four attendees) that focuses on setting up your pack for success.  The four-session series runs $240.00 and is available in afternoon and evening timeframes.

Problem Solving Dog Training

Problem Solving is 4-weeks of private classes focused on “problems” as defined by the dog owner.  Generally problems can be defined as anything that the dog owner believes is something that s/he wants to change about the dog’s behavior.  Examples of behaviors that might be worked on in the training are: The dog will not “come when called”.

Problem solving training for dogs is focused on dogs with “Bad Manners" IE:Jumping Up, Pulling On Leash, Excessive Barking, etc. Training is private or semi-private class arrangement.

For dogs with bad manners our problem solving dog training program is what we recommend.  Problems such as pulling on leash, jumping up on people, excessive barking, and other dog bad manners as determined by the client can be focused on in this class.

Problem Solving is 4-weeks of private classes focused on “problems” as defined by the dog owner.  The four weeks of sessions cost $320.00 and take place at your home, the dog park, or other venues agreed upon with our animal behaviorist-professional dog trainer to be best suited for the issues being addressed.  Generally problems can be defined as anything that the dog owner believes is something that s/he wants to change about the dog’s behavior.  Examples of behaviors that might be worked on in the training are: The dog will not “come when called”.  The dog has a habit of “jumping up on people” when they come into a room or stop for a chat.  When going for a walk the dog regularly “pulls on leash” in such a way that it is normal behavior.  There could be many other examples of problems but basically this class is designed for dogs with annoying behavior and should be distinguished from Behavior Adjustment Training (B.A.T.)  B.A.T. is for dog’s with symptoms of behavior stemming from Fear, Aggression, or Frustration issues.  If you are uncertain which class is appropriate that is no problem as a trainer at K9 Resort & Spa will be happy to evaluate your dog in a free consultation to determine which class is more appropriate.  With the help of K9 Resort & Spa we can solve the puzzle of doggie bad manners.

Snake Avoidance Dog Training

Our rattlesnake avoidance training style includes the use of rattlesnake scent, sight, sounds, and “leave it" and "focus" commands all presented in a positive training format. We do not use or condone the use of shock collars for this or any other dog / puppy training class.

Click Here for more information on Snake Avoidance at K9 Resort & Spa

K9 Resort & Spa’s snake avoidance training is positive reinforcement without the use of shock collars.  It is our belief that “learning should not be painful” and we have incorporated that belief into all of our training programs. Our snake avoidance training teaches dogs to avoid “all snakes” including rattlesnakes.  Our program is positive but we do teach the dog to fear snakes through the uses of Sight, Sound, Scent, and Handler Correction using the “Leave-It” command.

Empirical data from our clients after taking K9 Resort & Spa’s snake avoidance class suggests that it is highly effective.  We have never had a client contact us stating that their dog, after having taken our snake avoidance class, approached a rattlesnake.  Instead, every client that has reported back to us that upon encountering a rattlesnake stated that the dog avoided the snake in every case. Although this data is extremely positive, K9 Dog Park makes no guarantees that the rattlesnake avoidance training is 100% effective; this is simply the data we have received from our clients.  Like all training, snake avoidance training should have ongoing reinforcement by the dog owner.  We recommend that snake avoidance training be retaken on an annual basis if not reinforced regularly at home.
